Hi {{first_name | friend}},
A few days ago, a young man named Wilber Garces Perez was shot in the back by federal authorities while delivering food to my neighbors. There was no high-speed chase. No active crime committed. It just so happened he had an active call for deportation.
Within hours of being admitted to the hospital, he was sent to a detention center. With the bullet still inside him. Without pain medication. No matter how one tries to slice and dice it, being shot over papers is a classic case of inhumanity in action.
Thankfully, there is something we can do about it. For one, it’s understanding how we got here in the first place, and knowing what we can do to heal our communities.
It seems like divine timing that I was asked to moderate a talk with author Stan Biderman, who can fill us in on just that. We will be celebrating the launch of his book: The Secularlist’s Bible, and hope you will join us this Saturday in Austin. You can find more details below.
I have a few other exciting updates to announce, and I hope it gives you some nuggets of inspiration on how we can keep our head up and our spirits high, even when things seem to be spiraling out of control in the world outside of us.
Thank you for being on this journey with me and for standing for peace.
With gratitude,
Iza
